I have been working in the marketing/PR/comms space all my working life first as a PR consultant for 15 years and, for the past 12 years, as a specialist recruiter in this area. My experience with placing people in health-related businesses is mostly in the PR/comms space and has largely been with PR agencies. However, more recently I sourced a Brand Marketing Manager for a split role across Reckitt Benckiser and their PR agency, Health Haus. Many of the people who are now in comms/marketing related roles in pharma companies are ex-PR agency (or those coming into agency have come from pharma) so I feel I understand the skills and requirements for these often quite complex roles.

I feel very comfortable recruiting in this space and many of the skills and traits that are required for a strong PR/comms practitioner also apply to sales roles. I am finding that more of more of the roles I work on, whilst not specific called Sales, have a strong sales component in the remit and require the person to be bottom-line savvy, meet set targets/KPIs, move stock, drive sales and have definitive accountability. Sales people tend to have a real "gift of the gab" and it's important, as a recruiter, to get past that & really dig deep into their skills, ethos & professionalism. To see if they really have what it takes to get the job done. Effective/clever screening is required.

I have placed several people in these roles and enjoy the challenge, in particular with these roles, of finding the right person to suit the culture of the specific business. Matching the skills set is one thing but ensuring that the finance team will be successfully integrated into the business and work as one can be more challenging. Also the high level of trust that is required for people in these roles - extremely rigid scrutiny and referencing is required more so than usual.

I fill roles throughout Australia and use LinkedIn Recruiter mostly for this (to actively headhunt). I also utilise various job boards including LinkedIn, Seek, CareerOne, Gumtree and trade media specific to the role/sector. I interview via Skype for roles outside of Sydney and am flexible with hours/days to do this. I have also worked on roles in Singapore and Hong Kong and not found this daunting - particularly in sectors such as communications/media/sales/marketing/digital where I have the most experience.
