The IT workforce is continuously evolving as more technologies are being developed, so are jobs. However, over the past decade there has been one consistency in the workforce and that is the steadily decreasing lack of female representation and leadership in the IT industry and STEM Fields.

According to a study by the National Center for Women and Information Technology, in 2017 only 26% of the computing workforce were women. This means that there is a huge opportunity for women to pursue a career in a STEM-related field such as information technology.

Across the United States, companies in the STEM field are looking to change the lack of female representation by prioritizing gender diversity and inclusion initiatives. Investing in gender diversity in the workplace drives innovation, performance, reputation, and boosts profitability. Companies can also take steps to better retain women in the information technology field by offering professional networking and mentoring programs, which companies like PayPal have begun to offer.

A career path in technology can lead women down many paths and allow for continuous growth. In this field women can learn new skills such as coding and front-end web development, opening opportunities to job titles such as a web developer, IT manger, or network administrator.

Women who are looking for a profession in which they can be challenged by various opportunities, or those who are captivated by varied learning experiences, may find an awarding life-long career by entering the information technology field

Learn more about the bright future that women have in the information technology field by reviewing the infographic below created by our friends at Purdue University Global as it details job growth projections for various information technology occupations, leading tech companies that employ women, and the best U.S cities for women to succeed in IT.
