Top Interview Questions for IT Candidates

When I was in Information Technology, I loved interviewing Help Desk candidates. Not only did they have more personality in general (having to talk to people all day helps with that), but I got to ask them my favorite question: “Tell me how to tie my shoes.” The best candidates would ask whether my shoes had laces! After all, people who call for tech support don’t always ask the “right” question that will get them the help they need.

That said, it’s sometimes difficult for non-IT folks to interview the people who deal with technology day in and day out. When you’re looking for top IT candidates, you need to figure out whether they’ll be a decent culture fit as well as knowing their way around my butt. Our recruiters have once again supplied us with their favorite questions:

  • It’s a small company and you are the only IT person taking care of everything, from desktop to network. The CEO of the company has a laptop that is giving you error messages that you’ve never seen before, and they are wigging out. Describe for me how you handle the situation.
  • Technology changes every day (every minute, it feels like). How do you stay on top of what is changing and what is new? Be specific…what blogs, magazines, etc do you read regularly?
  • Let’s say I’m a user who is technologically challenged but I’m part of a team that is evaluating a new development project from a financial perspective. So I have to understand exactly what it does and how it works, and, most importantly, how much development and testing time it will take. Walk me through it. Use a specific example from your work experience.
  • What do you think most CEOs don’t understand about technology? And if you had the attention of your CEO (or any CEO that you admire), how would you go about educating them?
  • If you had a magic wand or a genie in lamp and could make one wish that would change any technology issue globally and instantly, what would you change and why?

  • Ask for industry / technology / project specific experience , challenges and their ability to deliver.
  • I ask them to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10 (+ provide examples/references where applicable) with their:
    • Consulting / Business Analysis skills
    • Functional – Configuration skills (Each module)
    • Technical – Programming / Development skills
    • Cross module / Integration experience
