It's conference time

It’s conference time: ATC Social Media and #tru Australia

We’re in Melbourne this week for a couple of exciting recruitment and talent conferences. We’ll be posting updates (and hopefully a few videos) of the highlights over the next few days.

As relative newcomers to the recruitment scene in Australia, we’re keen to learn, connect with new people, and contribute a few ideas.

1. Australian Talent Conference – Social Media  (1 Dec)

ATC runs a series of talent conferences across Australia. The Social Media conference brings leading organisations and experts in social media and mobile – clearly a couple of dominant trends in recruitment.

It’s a pretty impressive list of speakers. We’re looking forward to all of them, and particularly about some of the international guests:

Duncan Riley is an experienced writer/blogger, having founded The Inquisitr in 2008 and written for TechCrunch, Mashable and other leading (and traditional) outlets before then. The Inquisitr currently has over 1.8M readers per month – we’re looking forward to his views on content leadership in the new media age.

Jason Kerr is a Kiwi living in the US, with an extensive history of founding online businesses – including several in online recruitment. His latest company is, which focuses on social media in recruitment. Should be an interesting session!

Richard Cho is a Recruiting Manager at Facebook.  Enough said?  With +600M users, Facebook could emerge as the biggest recruitment platform of any kind over the next few years. Very excited to hear how they see this space developing.

Mike Casey is not quite as international, but is a Kiwi living in Sydney. One of the cofounders of Gradconnection, which is the biggest job site for graduate employment in Australia. These guys launched only 3 years ago, so social media is in their DNA. Looking forward to their views on how other companies can do the same.

2. #tru  – the recruiting unconference (2 Dec)

What the hell is an unconference?  Apparently, it’s like a conference, just without any organised plenaries, no powerpoint, and an emphasis on open discussion around broad topics (or ‘tracks’). Someone is assigned to ‘lead’ each track in advance, but everyone is encouraged to contribute in an open exchange of ideas.

#tru is now a global phenomenon leading this format for the recruitment and talent space. Bill Boorman runs a leading blog and is the driving force behind #tru – we’re especially excited to connect and plugin to this global movement. Bill’s views are uncompromising and often unconventional. We’ll be reporting back on the highlights!

Stay tuned for our wrap-up and reflections over the next week or so.
